Colonel Bengt Ljungquist Memorial Championships (BLM)
The Colonel Bengt Ljungquist Memorial Championships were founded in 1983 to stimulate regional dressage competition at the US Equestrian Federation (USEF) levels. They have served as a model for other regional championships throughout the United States. In 1985, the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) levels were added, and in 1988 Musical Freestyles were included. In 1990, the Training Level Final for senior riders was divided into two divisions based on the rider's experience at Third Level or above. In 1992, the First Level Final for senior riders also was split into two divisions. Separate Finals for junior/young riders are held at each level if there are at least four competitors in any division. Starting in 2003, Second through Fourth levelsfor senior riders will be split into two divisions based on the rider's experience at the FEI levels. A new addition for 2004 are finals for the Pas de Deux! At the 2007 Finals, the Prix St Georges riders will have two divisions, split by the rider's experience. These Championships are open to both US Citizens and foreign riders; the rider just has to be a member of a particpating GMO at the time of qualification. The Championships were founded by Dr. Samuel Barish, the current President of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) and are sponsored by Group Member Organizations within USDF Region 1 and the numerous qualifying shows.

FEI and USEF Young Horse Dressage Program
The Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Program (for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old horses) promotes the importance of selective breeding and correct training of horses in the United States, and encourages participation of breeders, riders, and trainers of young horses in dressage competition. The purposes of this program are to encourage the properly structured development of young dressage prospects through the training scale; to identify and recognize outstanding talent and the training of international-caliber horses; and to prepare these horses for future careers at the FEI level and participation on U.S. High Performance teams.

Open to horses aged 7-9 years with an Application of Intent filed with USEF. This program for 7- to 9-year-old horses at the FEI Prix St. Georges level continues USEF’s initiative to recognize up-and- coming dressage talent, not only for riders, but also for horses. This Championship is the next step in encouraging the development our future High Performance and Team horses," explains Gil Merrick, USEF Managing Director of Dressage and High Performance Dressage.

2011 USEF Dressage Tests (Training through 4th Level): From Region 1: The USEF Test Writing Sub-Committee is in the process of revising all USEF Dressage Tests (Training Fourth Levels) for 2011, which will take effect December 1, 2010 (the beginning of the USEF competition year). As work continues, the Test Writing Sub-Committee has made the following recommendations, which were supported by the Dressage Committee and announced during the USEF Dressage Committee Open Forum at the USDF Annual Convention in Austin, Texas, on December 3, 2009: Reduction of the number of tests per level to three (3) tests for ALL levels. Only Training Level tests may be held in a small arena (as included in the 2010 Rule Book). First Level Test 1 may no longer be held in a small arena. Allow either rising or sitting trot for both Training and First Level Tests. Have a clear distinction between each level. In particular, requirements for Fourth Level will be reduced to illustrate a clear difference between this level and PSG. Collective Marks will remain the same as current tests (Gaits x2, Impulsion x2, Submission x2, Rider x3). Keep all test times at six (6) minutes or less if possible. Re-writing of directives to update language and clarify description and intention of movements for both officials and competitors. Support the concept and possible development of "Rider Tests". The USEF Test Writing Sub-Committee anticipates presentation of final test drafts for approval during the USEF Dressage Committee's June meeting. Therefore, new test material should be available for public distribution by late summer 2010. All test information and updates will be posted on the Federation website, www.usef.org.
